Color the Mural/Dancing the Mural Arts Education Residencies

Safos Dance Theatre was grateful to be a part of the South Tucson community. We are passionate about sharing the contemporary visual and performing arts with people of all ages and backgrounds. Safos provided arts education programming at no-cost to participants in the City of South Tucson. As a part of the "Color the Mural" Project  we held three exciting arts education programs.

Residency #1
Residency #1

In June 2014, Safos held a week long summer mural making camp led by visual artist and muralist Mel Dominguez. In this camp, youth ages 5-14 surveyed their family and friends to create a community mural meaningful to, just like Safos did for the “Color the Mural” project! These murals were on display at the Columbus-Eckstrom Branch Library in July 2014.

Residency #2

Spring 2015, guest artist Armando Castellano of Quinteto Latino based in San Jose, CA came to Tucson and led four music master class for youth grades K-5 in the John Valenzuela Youth Center’s afterschool program. Youth participants learned the basics of music.

Residency #3

Safos Director Yvonne Montoya led a 6 month dance theater pilot program for seinor citizens in South Tucson to promote fitness, health, and participation in the arts. This program culminated with the piece "Las Comadres" that debuted at "Dancing the Mural" starring the program's participants.
